Greek philosopher Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Writing about your life will not only provide you with a clearer picture of your truest self, and unearth a treasure trove of memories to savor, but will also provide an enjoyable opportunity to practice skills of observation, recollection, reflection, and articulation. You will learn and master such techniques as brainstorming to find representative and evocative topics, selecting anecdotes and “hooks” to capture readers’ interest, extrapolating from the specific to the universal, writing descriptive and reflective prose, deploying language and images that are precise and vivid, creating smooth flow between sentences and paragraphs, and finding and using your unique perspective and voice. You’ll have a chance to respond to stimulating prompts and quick feedback to insure that your work is clear, engaging, and enlightening, your voice authentic and sincere, and your stories moving and reflective of your personality, interests, and experiences. With a cache of first-person essays in hand at the end of the week, you may feel inspired to continue writing a memoir, or to use your work as the basis for an essay for college and future job applications. You will gain writing skills and come to know yourself better, as Southern writer Flannery O’Connor asserted:  “I write because I don’t know what I think until I read what I say.”
