Creative Cooking, Fascinating Forensics, Model Rockets & More!

Baking Bonanza and Junior Chef “Snack Attack”

Holy Guacamole! This week was full of yumminess thanks to cooking-focused Enrichment courses! Campers in Bakers Bonanza made Lemon Squares, S’more Cookies, Lego Brownies, Cheesecake Pies and decorated their own cupcakes. Our Junior Chefs in the “Snack Attack” course learned how to make muffins, homemade chips and guac, and other delicious treats.

Balloon Rocket Car STEM Competition, Model Rocketry

What a blast! This week campers in STEM-centric Enrichment courses created different builds of balloon rocket cars and model rockets to see which would be more effective. They tried different methods and used their creativity and ingenuity to figure out the most effective “engine” and propulsion designs. We can’t wait to see the results in their culminating test drives and Graham Field launches this Friday afternoon!

Forensics

Whodunit?! Campers in the Forensics Enrichment course uncovered a “murder mystery” by applying careful crime scene analysis, research and investigative techniques. Using clues including splatter and footprint marks and fingerprinting methods, campers will aim to solve the crime.

Week 6 Highlights

The highlight of this final week of D-E 360° Summer Connections 2017, had to be Family Fun Day! Despite stormy weather outside, children and their families enjoyed an amazing afternoon that transformed the D-E School Silberfein Gymnasium into an indoor carnival. Campers enjoyed TWO huge bouncy houses, giant board games and “walking feet” activities, mini golf, popsicles, and each other’s company. This week also featured a focus on the animals found in Mountain Regions as part of Discoveries & Adventures’ ongoing explorations in “Habitats of the World”. An “End-of-Summer Celebration” will close Week 6 and Summer 2017 in a memorable way for all our youngest campers.

Wrapping Up 2017

Summer 2017 officially comes to end this week! And what a summer it was. More than 800 campers in Preschool through Grade 12 enjoyed hundreds of wonderful new experiences. String Society 2017 kicked off our summer in both classic and contemporary ways. Field trips to destinations including the American Museum of Natural History, Bronx Zoo, Yogi Berra Museum, Met Life Stadium, Storm King Art Center, Yankee Stadium…. to name a very few…. provided exciting off-campus adventures. Young Visionaries immersed campers into art, architecture and design. Expert coaches, instructors, and presenters in business entrepreneurship, debate, sports, STEM, yoga, and other areas filled our classrooms, labs, playing fields, and stages with wonderful perspectives and inspiring insights. Campers in Scholars and Academic Enrichment earned credit and gained confidence for the fall. We hope to see everyone again next year, for D-E 360° Summer Connections 2018!

Polar Pursuits, Investigative Enrichment, STEM Institute & more!

Polar Pursuits

As part of their “Habitats of the World” explorations, our youngest campers in Discoveries & Adventures this week learned all about the cool arctic animals that inhabit polar regions. See below for details and more photos!

PAWject Bake Sale

This week campers enrolled in the Critical Reading and Writing Academic Enrichment course went ‘above and beyond’: In addition to completing their academic requirements, they also organized a special “PAWject” Bake Sale to raise money for the Closter Animal Welfare Society (CLAWS)! These dedicated campers worked diligently to make delicious baked goods, decorate the dining hall, and sell their treats, all for a great ‘claws’. Through their study of Paul Fleishman’s novel Seedfolks and their work on argumentative essays, the campers were inspired to make a difference themselves in our community. In the end, the campers raised $200, which will help pay for animals’ medicine, food, beds, etc.

Young Visionaries

The final, concluding half of this two-week, intensive “Immersive” course had campers diving into Printmaking, Sculpture, and Painting/Mixed-Media. These young campers also look forward to a presentation for their families and friends on the final day of the class, Friday, July 28, at which they will showcase all the incredible artistic, architectural, design, and other works they have created!

Investigative Reporting

Campers in this Enrichment course this week enjoyed a sneak peek at the fast-paced, exciting life of an investigative reporter. Through interviews with administrators, teachers, and fellow campers, our journalists learned how to answer the 5 W’s (who, what, where, when, and why) and get the scoop on the daily happenings of D-E 360° Summer Connections. Campers were given the opportunity to explore the issues that matter to them, resulting in articles focused on everything from the moving of the school’s Bulldog mascot to the work of other classes, such as STEM Institute.

Optical Illusion

Campers in this enlightening Enrichment course learned the importance of brightness, tilt, and texture when it comes to creating an optical illusion. Using shapes and colors, campers were able to blend different objects into their optical illusion without making it noticeable.

STEM Institute

A workshop aimed specifically at Grade 4-12 teachers, STEM Institute gave a dedicated, enthusiastic group of 11 educators hands-on exposure to a 3-day Project Based Learning(PBL) / Makerspace environment. The workshop was designed to teach participants how to design and assess great student projects. Taught by expert technology teachers Trevor Shaw and Kevin Jarrett, STEM Institute gave the teachers the chance to apply PBL and Makerspace instructional experiences from the student perspective, as they built and coded their own electronic inventions using Arduino and Raspberry Pi devices. They also joined a student workshop and practiced delivering mini-lessons coaching students, assessing their learnings in an actual classroom setting.

Junior Summer Day Camp, Discoveries & Adventures

Week 5 Highlights: POLAR PURSUITS

This week our Junior Summer Day Camp and Discoveries campers learned all about the amazing arctic animals that inhabit the polar regions of the world. Our “Polar Plungers” listened to a variety of picture books, learned about snow and icebergs, and even created their own snow and igloos during art class. Arctic animals were introduced, along with the characteristics of these animals that allow them to survive harsh arctic conditions. The children truly enjoyed exploring the arctic with us!

Adventures campers went on a trip to The Bronx Zoo on Wednesday, which included a visit to the Polar Bear exhibit. Campers learned that polar bears are going extinct and we need to save them. They also learned that most Polar Bears only last till 20 years old in the wild but in the Zoo they can live until age 30.; the Bronx Zoo Polar Bar is 25. Campers also rode the monorail.

New Media Experiences & Outdoor Explorations!

Advertising Executive

Enrichment campers in the Advertising Executive course this week learned power words and how to appeal to an audience in advertising. Making posters about their “agency” taught them how to draw people in with words and pictures. Each “agency” presented their idea to the class like it was a “real deal” pitch.

Fake News

Fake News was THE course to take this week for campers interested in fact-checking and learning how to question sources of news and other online media. Campers looked closely at social media posts, and analyzed if they were real or newsworthy to pass on. They also learned how companies, brands and services track online behavior. Campers are now more critical about their news consumption and more ‘net savvy in general!

Video Production

Enrichment course campers in Video Production loved learning from expert freelance videographer Lander Camarero. The campers worked as actors, editors, and producers, and employed imagination and technology both to apply new techniques, including voice-overs with the use of echo.

Young Visionaries

The first part of this two-week, intensive “Immersive” course had campers enjoying Woodworking, Drawing, Acting, Movement, and Sculpture. A highlight was a field trip to Storm King Art Center. Next week these campers can look forward to Printmaking and Painting/Mixed-Media, plus a special exhibit/presentation for their families and friends on Friday, July 28!

Vegetable Gardening & Cooking

Campers in the Vegetable Gardening & Cooking Enrichment course this week enjoyed summer’s bounty, including fresh Cherokee Purple, Gold Medal, and Heirloom Tomatoes from the Dwight-Englewood Upper School garden. They handpicked and then fried the tomatoes, added mozzarella cheese and topped it all off with homemade pesto sauce. Bon appetit!

Entrepreneurs Academy

Campers in this “Immersive” course have taken a deep dive into business start-up strategies this week, including hearing from guest speakers like business expert (and D-E School parent) Dr. Vikram Akula. A pioneer in market-based approaches to financial inclusion, Dr. Akula shared the importance of helping others through entrepreneurship. Dr. Akula currently serves as Chairperson of VAYA Finserv Private Limited, an India-based company that provides financial services to low-income groups on behalf of partner banks. Campers also heard from Gerald R. Davis, Principal at Alchemy Properties. Located in NYC, Alchemy Properties specializes in development and investment. From Davis, our campers learned about fluctuations in real estate cycles and different types of real estate. Our budding entrpreneurs also talked about supply and demand economics and how to make money from investment properties. Finally on Friday, campers will hear from David Check, Executive Producer of Major League Baseball Productions, the in-house production company of MLB. Check has worked on well-known films, such as Michael Jordan “Come Fly with Me,” Brooklyn Dodgers “The Ghosts of Flatbush,” and “Knuckleball.”

On Thursday the campers traveled to the National Tennis Center, and Friday includes a visit to MetLife Stadium and the Yogi Berra Museum.

FIT U/3-DAY CHALLENGE

Fit U – 3 Day Challenge offered campers this week a great way to get in the habit of setting healthy goals at a young age. By working with fitness expert and instructors James Byrne and Vanessa Gomez, as well as guest speakers, campers increased their endurance, flexibility, and strength through fun activities. Campers also learned about nutrition in their daily meals and were reminded that there many different ways to be fit; in life you just need to find what makes you HEALTHY and HAPPY!

CODING WITH RASPBERRY PI

Expert STEM teacher Kevin Jarrett sparked campers’ coding interests with the Coding with Raspberry Pi Immersive course, held in the beautiful D-E Hajjar STEM Center. No, we’re not baking desserts, we are diving deep into computer science topics using a $35 computer called a Raspberry Pi.
