Middle School Enrichment (MSE) is the D-E360° program provided for students in the Middle School (Grades 6-8). We pride ourselves in offering a wide variety that challenge and expand students’ horizons, including Chess Team, Graphic Design, Fencing, and more!  Our goal is to provide a safe environment for students to grow and express themselves. At MSE, we believe students should have the opportunity to take part in a program that is dedicated to investing in their growth in a fun and exciting way!

MSE 2021-2022 Offerings

Tuesdays 5:00 PM | Graphic Design

VineyardAppCamp (VAC) is an innovative tech, entrepreneurship and design program where students learn the skills to be a designer. Students learn graphic design by launching real social media ads.  This is a great option for students interested in drawing, art, or design. In this class, they’ll learn how to use doodling skills for real, by doing design projects for local nonprofits or small businesses. Students will walk away with skills on how to make professional posters and art that people want to pay for, and ultimately design posters and ads for real organizations with good causes. Our students’ work has been used in ads and online Instagrams posts by the Special Olympics, Martha’s Kitchen, and local shelters.

Wednesdays 4:50 PM | Chess Team

Our mission is to spread the love of the game as well as develop a child’s mind with advanced logistical gaming skills. Students are taught to explore the foundations of chess strategy. Chess is a fun way to improve skill in planning, critical thinking, pattern recognition, and general learning aptitude. This class offers many opportunities for collaboration, encourages sportsmanship, confidence, and goal setting, in a supportive learning environment. All participants will be enrolled in seasonal chess tournaments on campus that allows for them to earn ranking with the National Chess Federation.

Thursdays 5:00 PM | Game Design

Build Your Own Game! Ever wanted to build your own games or apps? Love Roblox or Minecraft? Well, this is the class for you! In this course, students will learn the skills of a coder through conceiving, designing, and creating their own mobile app games. The resulting games can be shared online and texted to friends for them to play on their phones. It’s a great way to combine learning with fun with becoming a game developer.  You don’t need any previous experience or special software to take this: all you need is your creativity and a laptop.

Thursdays 4:45 PM | Fencing with Durkan Fencing Academy

Developed and coached by internationally recognized Durkan Fencing Academy (DFA),  this program provides a unified method fencing instruction that will result in general athletic development (i.e. coordination, balance, agility, speed and general fitness) and promote the mastery of fencing specific skills (i.e. lunge, parry or head-cut) with a deep understanding of the techniques and tactics required to score more points and win more fencing bouts. New students will receive a solid introduction to Fencing, while returning students will continue to refine their skills, as our fencing community grows. All equipment is provided. Equipment may also be purchased. Click here for more information.

Friday 4:00 PM | Artists’ Club: Painters & Sculptures

Calling all young artists and visionaries in grades 6-8 for some Friday fun painting and sculpting in Umpleby Hall.  We’re turning the large common area in Umpleby into a giant artist studio with lessons facilitated by our DE360° team art teacher, Victoria Estany-Greenway.  Ms. Greenway is a highly experienced art educator who will share a number of mediums for students to create.  What’s also so very exciting about this Enrichment offering is that our students can work on their masterpieces over time if they need to do so.  Students might finish one piece and start another in the span of the class. Or they may elect to continue with their work each Friday that they’re with us after school.  The Artist Club is an Open Studio activity; students are invited to work independently on their art until 5:30 PM. Art pieces will be stored in Umpleby 315.
