Week 3 Highlights (July 10 – 14, 2017)
Exploring (Rocket) Science, Start-Ups,
the Sea & More!
Model Rocketry
Yes, it IS rocket science. Enrichment campers in this week’s Model Rocketry course designed and built their own rockets, learning about gravity and propulsion in the process. The best part: launching these impressive spatial creations on Graham Field!
Entrepreneurs Academy
Campers in this “Immersive” course have taken a deep dive into business start-up strategies this week, including hearing from guest speakers like business expert (and D-E School parent) Dr. Vikram Akula. A pioneer in market-based approaches to financial inclusion, Dr. Akula shared the importance of helping others through entrepreneurship. Dr. Akula currently serves as Chairperson of VAYA Finserv Private Limited, an India-based company that provides financial services to low-income groups on behalf of partner banks. Campers also heard from Gerald R. Davis, Principal at Alchemy Properties. Located in NYC, Alchemy Properties specializes in development and investment. From Davis, our campers learned about fluctuations in real estate cycles and different types of real estate. Our budding entrpreneurs also talked about supply and demand economics and how to make money from investment properties. Finally on Friday, campers will hear from David Check, Executive Producer of Major League Baseball Productions, the in-house production company of MLB. Check has worked on well-known films, such as Michael Jordan “Come Fly with Me,” Brooklyn Dodgers “The Ghosts of Flatbush,” and “Knuckleball.”
STEM Challenge
This week, the campers in this Immersive course enjoyed learning skills in coding, 3D modeling, and electronics, by building remote-controlled cars and then working to get the cars through various obstacles. This course challenged students who have a passion for engineering and problem solving.
The Verdict
Enrichment campers in The Verdict will wrap up Week 3 with a mock trial on “The Great Sea World Controversy: Do Orcas/Whales Need Our Protection?” Their Friday Showcase event will be the culmination of their work on making the case either for or against whale protection, in a courtroom-like setting.
Upcycle
One person’s trash is another’s treasure! This week Enrichment campers in the Upcycle course have learned all about re-using and recycling materials to design and create new products and turning them into art.
