MAKE YOUR OWN CANVAS
Campers in our Make Your Own Canvas Immersive painting course enjoyed spending time this week with guest artist Washington Young, also known as “Ton Ton”. Ton Ton is a well-known Filipino artist who incorporates humor into his drawings. Ton Ton is mainly known for his comic strip Pupung, about a young boy, his family and their household. In 2004, Ton Ton received the Grand Award for Best Comic Strip from the Catholic Mass Media Awards. Ton Ton dabbles in painting as well. With guidance from Ton Ton as well as lead teacher and D-E Visual Arts Faculty member Lydia Scrivanch, campers created paintings from photo examples with beautiful color schemes.

On Thursday the campers traveled to the National Tennis Center, and Friday includes a visit to MetLife Stadium and the Yogi Berra Museum.
FIT U/3-DAY CHALLENGE
Fit U – 3 Day Challenge offered campers this week a great way to get in the habit of setting healthy goals at a young age. By working with fitness expert and instructors James Byrne and Vanessa Gomez, as well as guest speakers, campers increased their endurance, flexibility, and strength through fun activities. Campers also learned about nutrition in their daily meals and were reminded that there many different ways to be fit; in life you just need to find what makes you HEALTHY and HAPPY!
CODING WITH RASPBERRY PI
Expert STEM teacher Kevin Jarrett sparked campers’ coding interests with the Coding with Raspberry Pi Immersive course, held in the beautiful D-E Hajjar STEM Center. No, we’re not baking desserts, we are diving deep into computer science topics using a $35 computer called a Raspberry Pi. Students are learning the basics of Linux as they configure their Pi and are mastering some electronics fundamentals by creating some custom designed hardware to interact with our games. Tomorrow, students will bring home their new Raspberry Pi along with all of the software they created on it.
