SC 2019 Week 3 Adventures Group 4 Update 

What an exciting week!

In Group 4 we unlocked our magical door to the prehistoric era!!

Group 4 found ourselves in the land of “Bedrock” or as we call it “DEROCK”. We loved learning about what life was like for America’s favorite family cartoon, “The Flinstones”. Come check out our self portraits, they are sure to be a crowd pleaser. Yabba-Dabba Doo!!

We also loved learning about the various dinosaurs that once roamed the earth.

What an exciting week!

What is American about America?

Cars!!! In group 4 we are learning about one of America’s greatest inventions the Model T car created by Henry Ford.

With the help of Mo Rocca we are exploring the Henry Ford Innovation Nation through a virtual field trip!

Adventures: Group 4

Olympians in Training!

  • During the week of August 8, Adventures Group 4 campers will enjoy being “Olympians in training” when they participate in “mini” Olympic athletics events, and prepare a summer Olympics-inspired Friday Showcase!
  • We will also enjoy live viewing of some of the Olympics taking place in Rio.

An Olympic-inspired Art Project!

  • During the week of August 1, Adventures Group 4 campers will  work on an art silhouette project inspired by contemporary graphic artist Keith Haring, and reflecting energy, the enthusiasm of children, uplifting colors, and stylized figures  representing Olympic athletes!
  • In addition, campers will learn more about Tanni-Grey Thompson, an iconic Paralympic athlete, and we will take a closer look at Tom, the Paralympic Games Mascot.

Art Around the World

  • For the week of July 25, our Adventures: Group 4 campers will take a “trip” inspired by their ongoing “Passport Art Project Around the World” — taking a closer look into the five continents of Africa, the Americas, Europe, Asia, & Australia and art inspired by each of those continents.

Olympians in the Making!

  • During the week of July 18 our Adventures: Group 4 campers will think about what makes an athlete an Olympian, as they  learn more about specific standout athletes from years past who shaped the Olympics, and  ‘Olympians in the making’:  Will Steph Curry and LeBron James capture gold for the US Mens’ Basketball team? Will Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman attain championship status for the US Gymnastics team? 
  • We also look forward to chalk art drawing outdoors (weather permitting).

Adventures: Group 4

Citius, Altius, Fortius….

  • During the week of July 11, our Adventures: Group 4 campers will  learn all about and embark on a new project related to Amaphora — the art of ancient Greece — and they will also will create their very own Olympic laurel (head leaf) wreaths!
  • As part of our ongoing Olympics theme, campers will also take an historical look at the Olympics, and the origins of “Citius, Altius, Fortius” (translated as “Faster; Higher; Stronger”),  the Olympics motto.

  • Geography study of Rio de Janeiro
  • Traditional Music and Dance lesson from Brazil
  • Art project on the architecture of Brazil
  • A look at Rio and its preparations for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Olympics Skills Challenge this week to kick off our summer!

  • Activities, challenges, games. Leadership, sportsmanship, team spirit on Leggett Field.
  • Trip to High Exposure Action Adventure on Wednesday, June 29. Sporting facility with obstacles high off and low to the ground. Builds strength and courage and develops friendship and teamwork. Adventures: Art

Adventures in art await!

  • Campers will learn about line, shape, color and symbols in art.
  • They will create an Olympics ring poster with printmaking techniques and paint.
  • They will also make an art journal; which they will work on the weeks they are here.
  • They will be using washable paint the first two weeks they are here. Make sure they are wearing suitable clothing.

Adventures: Cooking/Spanish/Drama

Bienvenidos to our first week of SC 2016!

  • Students will learn and sing the “Greetings of the Day Song” in Spanish. (Buenos Dias, Buenas Tardes, Buenas Noches).
  • Students will learn how to count up to 15 in Spanish.
  • Students will learn how to say “My name is in Spanish” (Mi nombres).
  • Students will learn about the Brazilian Flag, where the Summer Olympics are taking place.
  • I’ll read The Little Red Hen in Spanish and we will discuss the characters and learn their names in Spanish: La Gallina, El Perro, El Gato, y El Pato.
  • Students will learn how to bake bread and make connections to the story: La Gallinita Roja
  • Students will take turns introducing themselves as the characters in the story.

  • Color & make wearable paper model of an arm bone

  • Color & make wearable paper model of hands and finger bones
  • Measure our arm and leg bones
  • Make & attach a model of muscles to arm bone
  • Make model of a brain using Playdoh

Adventures: Group 4

Community building during Week 1:

  • A welcome with a focus on community building activities that will encourage and teach our campers about sportsmanship and important Olympic values.
  • They will also design and create our very own“Olympic Mascot”
  • Campers will be able to learn fun facts about the Olympic Games and create an Olympic Torch, as they take a closer look at the journey of the Olympic Torch.
