Peru is a country rich with history and remarkable for its indigenous people, culture, and traditions. Students currently in Grade 8 will explore the Andean countryside, visiting ancient ruins, fortresses, and cathedrals that provide a firsthand look into the Inca Empire and subsequent Spanish Conquest. Highlights include Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley of the Incas, and Cusco, capital of the Inca Empire.
We will take in the incredible Andean landscapes while immersing ourselves in the local indigenous culture, experiencing the convergence of pre-Columbian, Spanish, and Moorish influences that have shaped the art and architecture of the Andes. The trip will offer a framework for understanding conquest, assimilation, and cultural exchanges that have occurred throughout history. Students will bond as travelers, not tourists, in environments far different from home.

Trip Leadership
Trip Organizer & Chaperone: Jon Egan
Jon Egan has regularly traveled to South America for over 30 years. He first had the opportunity to go in 1992 as an eighth grader himself, when two of his intrepid teachers brought him and a group of his classmates for five weeks.
Inspired by the experience, Mr. Egan has continued to explore the Andes region and learn about its history and ecology. In 2011, he began organizing and leading trips for his own 8th grade students.
His goal through these trips is to pass on a love of travel and exploring unfamiliar landscapes and cultures. Mr. Egan is an 8th grade Math teacher and advisor and serves as the head coach of the MS Cross Country, Boys Basketball, and US Ultimate Frisbee teams.
Our Guides
AB Expeditions
Mr. Egan and D-E have worked exclusively with AB Expeditions on five previous 8th grade trips to Peru (2018, 2019, 2024, 2025, and 2026).
The company was founded by Abel and Elsa Quillahuaman, who began as entry-level porters for trekking companies and experienced firsthand the mistreatment and underpayment of porters and cooks on the Inca Trail.
In 2016, they left their jobs and started AB Expeditions, a licensed tour company focused on providing outstanding service to its clients and local workers while improving industry standards.
The company is 100% locally owned and operated and enjoys a nearly perfect record on Tripadvisor, with 3,184 of 3,210 reviews receiving five stars as of August 25, 2026.
Their bilingual guides are native to the Cusco area and are sought after for their experience, passion for the region, and expert knowledge of its ecosystems, mountains, villages, and indigenous history.
